My Peace
John 14 | Pastor Winston Parrish
Almost everyone wants peace. People pursue it and chase it. Turmoil surrounds us; it’s in us, it’s in our past, and it’s in our immediate future. There is an absence of personal peace, family peace, local peace, national peace, and international peace. In the last 3,500 years of world history, there have been less than 300 years that could be called peaceful.
People settle for the bare minimum definition of peace: a moment’s calm, tranquility for a moment, a brief truce. Thomas Jefferson defined peace as “that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.”
But there is a peace that comes only from God, and that’s the peace presented to us in John 14. Only God, and only through His Word, can we define what real peace is. Christ promised them: “Whatever you ask in My name, I will do it. You have all of heaven’s resources at your disposal for ministry, and even though I won’t be here, the Comforter will come.
Four Characteristics of His Perfect Peace:
- Real Peace Romans 8:6, Romans 5:1
- Great Peace Psalm 119:165, Isaiah 54:13
- Abundant Peace Jeremiah 33:6, Romans 15:13
- Abiding Peace Philippians 4:7, James 4:8
The measure of the real peace depends on the measure of your surrender. Lost man: If you want His peace, He must be Lord in your life. Submit, surrender, repent of your sin, and be saved. Backslider: There is no peace in the foreign land; run back Home! Christian: Be reminded of the peace He gave as a gift.
