“Profane Prophets, Powerless Priests, and Pitiful Kings”
Joshua 24 | A Selection of Scripture | Pastor Winston Parrish
Joshua chapter 24 serves as a pivotal moment in the history of the Israelites as they stand on the brink of a new era. Joshua is not far from death, and here he is, making a plea for the people he loves. Joshua takes Israel on a journey through their collective history, starting with the time of Abraham and recounting the miraculous deliverance from Egypt, the wanderings in the wilderness, and the conquest of the Promised Land. Through this historical review, Joshua seeks to remind the people of God’s faithfulness, provision, and protection throughout their generations.
Central to Joshua’s plea is the call to decision and commitment. He presents the people with a choice to serve the gods of the surrounding nations or to serve the Lord who brought them out of Egypt and into the land of Canaan.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. ~ Joshua 24:15
- Our Homes must have a PROPHET – 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12
- Our homes must have a PRIEST – Hebrews 4:14-16
- Our homes must have KING – 1 Timothy 5:8
The real pressure here is to get good at one role and ignore the others. The spiritual needs of our homes will never be met by having just one of these roles met. There is a dire need for all three in one man. This is the foundation of being a Christlike leader in our households. We achieve it by fulfilling the roles of prophet, priest, and king. In doing so, we mirror Christ’s example without trying to take His place.
