Serving Self, or Serving The Savior?
Mark 10:35-45 | Pastor Winston Parrish
There’s a dialog in Mark 10 between our Lord and His inner circle of disciples. These moments are genuinely shocking. Notice with me now as the sons of Zebedee approach the Lord Jesus in Mark 10:35-45
Notice the disciples have exposed their own weaknesses, their own motivations, and their pride. We know that these men love Jesus, they love truth, they believe in Him, they trust Him. They believe in His Kingdom. They are saved, and they have been called to serve and follow Jesus in the most intimate way possible, yet they still struggle with pride!
Their pride is exposing their materialistic view of the Kingdom; their coming to Jesus was all about what they would get. More than wanting what Jesus wanted for them, they desired a payday, a day of glory, and to feel the splendor of God’s own glory! They already have inside access! Yet, these men are struggling with pride.
The church in America is run rampant with people who call themselves servants of the Lord Christ Jesus. The problem is, more than they want Jesus Christ, they want power, position, and prestige! Are we serving ourselves or serving the Savior?
- Serving requires suffering – Mark 10:38-39
- Serving requires sacrifice – Luke 9:23
- Serving requires spirit – 2 Corinthians 4:7
Jesus was the supreme example of servant leadership! The King of kings and Lord of lords relinquished His privileges and gave His life as a selfless sacrifice in serving others.
